Was California’s name derived from A Black Virgin Queen? The state of California was named for Califia, reputedly a Black virgin queen. She was said to rule an “island nation” of Amazons, where gold was the only metal. Even as late as 1707, some European maps continued to depict California as an island. While many California children hear the story in school of the origin of our State’s name, not many are made aware that she was said to be Black.

California, the land of the ever-living Moorish / Muurish Empress Calafia/Califia. Calafia was the title of each Empress. California was her land. She was known to be black of skin, of the Moorish Muurish Nationality, and ruled over Islands and Islands of black people, from California, Baja, to Hawaii.

It was first mentioned in the records of the western European Christians in the seventh century, and retold “The Song of Roland” where a passing mention of a place called Califerne, was made perhaps because it was the caliph’s domain. Spanish conquistadors told stories about a mystical black Muurish Queen that ruled a State of California, situated in the same location as the present day California. The modern state of State California continues the legacy and the memory of this great black Queendom and its Queens.

  1. The article on California’s name was very interesting. I had no idea where the name of our state came from and that Califia was a mystical black virgin Queen.
