21-year-old Ghanaian technology pioneer, innovator, and architect Iddris Sandu led a sold-out master class at Apple in Santa Monica. Filling the store, he attracted one of the largest crowds the location has hosted to date.

Renowned for spearheading innovation for Uber, Twitter, and Yeezy, the African architect taught a class entitled, “Design Lab: Drawing From Nature.” The eager and receptive audience consisted of pre-teens, press, industry veterans, and tech-curious mature adults alike. As part of the curriculum, each attendee operated an iPad pro and followed the designer’s instruction on the Procreate app and Apple Pencil. Culling influence and inspiration directly from nature’s own geometric complexities, the course encouraged the identification of colors, patterns, shapes, and themes in the everyday physical world.

The class concluded with a show-n-tell of work created by the audience on a massive LED screen. One piece notably paid homage to the late Nipsey Hussle—whose Marathon Store was designed by Iddris.

“Nipsey Hussle once said that “the most honorable human act is to inspire. I’m honored to have taught a class for the largest company in the world. The brand which in 2007 (at the age of 11) inspired and truly activated me to begin my journey. ‏‏‎ ‏‏ Today at 21, I’m filled with so much humility at how the Universe/God continues to use me as a vessel to service the world and be an open beacon for the youth. Thank you Apple for allowing me to honor the culture, the ones who paved the way for me to be here, and for believing in OUR message. For believing in the message and for assisting in servicing the world through love and the democratization of quality through design. Most importantly, thank you to the 200+ community that attended for giving US the privilege to expose you all to things such as the importance of good design, tessellations, and biomimicry. WE will continue to serve you all” – Iddris Sandu

Drawing influence from nature’s own geometric complexities, Iddris’ course will encourage identifying colors, patterns, shapes, and themes in the everyday physical world. Iddris will inspire the recognition of such structures and instruct attendees as they utilize the iPad app Procreate and Apple Pencil to draw similar shapes to support further design for everything from buildings to art. Guests may bring their own devices or utilize store hardware.
