Truly one-of-a-kind, King Preferred is the first Black woman-owned, Kosher certified OUD, Non-GMO, specialty food baking mix company. The business was founded in 2012 by LaTonya King as a way to express her love for cooking, which was passed down to her from her Aunt Sadie. Growing up, LaTonya would spend the weekends with her aunt, and on Sunday’s they would cook dinner together accompanied with a delicious, homemade dessert. Not one to let her Tennessee tradition fade away, LaTonya decided to utilize her aunt’s cake mixes and share them with the world. From there, King Preferred was born!
Building the company was not an easy feat, as LaTonya had to work tirelessly to carve out a niche in a baking industry that is dominated with the larger household name brands. Fortunately, her mixes are quickly making a name for themselves by way of trade shows, Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, NY, Cubs Foods, national magazine ads, and good, old-fashioned word of mouth. Most recently, she showcased her mixes at the Kosher Fest in Secaucus, NJ with the crowds ranking their favorites as Bread Pudding, Banana Pudding Pound Cake, Cream Cheese Pound Cake, and Chocolate.
Although King Preferred is based in Elkhart, Indiana, LaTonya has developed strong connections in Louisville, KY, which led to a partnership with Workwell Industries, a non-profit packaging company whose sole mission is to create jobs for people with barriers to employment. Her decision to partner with Workwell Industries was an easy one as Workwell Industries like LaTonya is an advocate for veterans, those with disabilities, and anyone that need a second chance. These core values make for a great partnership.
