African Americans Face Higher COVID-19 Infection and Death Rates

Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights

On Friday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began issuing some race and ethnic demographic data related to positive COVID-19 cases. On a parallel track, more states and cities have started to release racial and ethnic data concerning tests, cases and/or deaths. Reports from doctors show that African Americans continue to be disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Limited access to testing may cause delayed care, an increased risk of high mortality rates, and the acceleration of the spread of the disease in communities throughout the country. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law will react to new developments regarding the collection and reporting of data. Doctors will also react to the limitations of this new data and share first-hand observations regarding the continued impact of the pandemic on the Black community.

Join the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law national press call as we respond to new developments concerning race, data and the pandemic.

Hear from doctors and medical professionals who will outline why comprehensive racial data remains central to addressing the impact of this pandemic on Black communities and other communities of color.
