U.S. Senator Kamala Harris announced her candidacy for President of the United States in an interview today on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and in a teaser video on her social media accounts. The video revealed she will formally launch her campaign at an Oakland rally on Sunday, January 27.

At the rally, Harris will lay out why she is running for president, the challenges that face the nation and her vision for the country. Harris believes that the time is now for us all to defend the American values of equality, decency, justice, and democracy — and her candidacy will be animated by her life’s work of fighting “for the people.”

“I am running for president of the United States,” Harris said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“I love my country. This is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are,” she continued. “My entire career has been focused on keeping people safe it is probably one of the things that has motivated me more than anything else. When I look at this moment in time, I know that the American people need someone who is going to fight for them, who is going to see them, who will hear them, who is going to care about them, who will be concerned about their experience, who is going to put them in front of self-interest.”

Before joining the Senate, where she has been a leader on holding the Trump administration accountable, championing Dreamers and fighting for Medicare for All, a middle class tax cut, and more, Harris was twice elected Attorney General of California, an agency of 5,000 staff and the largest state Department of Justice in America. A career prosecutor, Harris has spent her career fighting on behalf of the people — taking on big banks on behalf of homeowners, pharmaceutical companies on behalf of patients and consumers, and for-profit colleges on behalf of students.
